Exciting and at the same time terrifying news has surfaced from China’s leading robotics engineering firm. Unitree, an organization whose innovative android companions have gaalreadyrnered viral attention, including on our site, has just announced their new model. Just like its predecessors, it has sparked significant backlash, terrified citizens, and attracted a substantial number of investors, as well as curious engineers and aristocrats eager to purchase the robotic monstrosity.
The new model, GD01, unlike its predecessors, was not specifically designed to serve as a light, compact, and mobile standalone companion; rather, it was created to enhance human abilities. GD01 cannot genuinely be classified as an AI companion; instead, it is a large, piloted MECHA-style vehicle that evidently requires an operator at all times, as demonstrated by CEO Wang Xingxing when he climbed into one of the models while showcasing the vehicle on 12th of May 2026
Wang also added that their vehicle will mark the first production-ready transformable mecha that is, most importantly, operational, potentially advancing robotics and personal transportation into an even more distant futuristic perspective.
The current industry shift in transportation, driven by an increasing number of available aviation vehicles, essential flying cars, as well as self-driving districts and tunnel roads being constructed in the USA, has rapidly evolved into an unbelievably dynamic sector. It is impossible to foresee the effects of the availability of such vehicles that Unitree has now introduced to the market. Although it is currently available only in China, it is expected to cross the sea in due time.

Yet this time, Unitree might have just taken the industry to an even more futuristic level. The GD01‘s development began in early 2025, and with the assistance of previously developed technologies, rapid progress was inevitable. By July 2026, Unitree confirmed its intention to introduce the product in major outlets such as WIRED, and shortly thereafter, the product demo video was presented for the world to view.
We need not emphasize that the demo was a complete success and exceeded expectations. Existing and new investors began pouring in, raising the company’s net worth to an astonishing $1.7 billion, alongside numerous requests for early purchases from various theme parks, industrial and tourism operators, as well as many wealthy enthusiasts.
The metal monster, equivalent to a small car, weighs approximately 500 kg or 1,100 lbs. Described as a civilian vehicle, it can operate in a four-legged/crawling mode as a bipedal machine for stable transport in rough terrain, or it can be transformed into an upright position, rising to become a fearsome robotic beast, standing over 3 meters tall and walks on two legs, much like the robots seen in popular Hollywood movies Transformers.
While this may sound fascinating to some, prompting an eager rush to purchase one, it is important to note that the product is currently far from mass-consumer production, as evidenced by the astonishing price of 3.9 million CNY (roughly $537,000–$650,000). Their focus currently remains on Chinese distribution, with an expected delivery in early 2027, however, no information is available regarding when, or if ever, it will be accessible in the global market, aside from the third-party proxy buyers mentioned in our previous articles.
The reasoning behind the development of the GD01 was to showcase the technological level Unitree is currently at and to expand their market reach beyond humanoids, creating a robotic vehicle suitable for day-to-day use and elevating current transportation to something that can only be described in sci-fi movies.
Related Earlier Rideable: B2-W Robot Dog
In December 2024 Unitree showcased the B2-W (wheeled industrial quadruped, mass-produced earlier). Videos demonstrated it carrying an adult rider safely across slopes and rough terrain, plus flips, jumps, water traversal, and high speeds. It was described as the world’s first robot dog designed for riding. This is a smaller, more practical industrial/research platform (payload ratings in the tens of kg walking / higher standing; commercial availability through Unitree channels) rather than a giant mecha.
