The Olympic is a huge event , for hundreds of years now humankind regarded the celebration with significant importance and considered a crucial building stone of our economical and entertainment system, so, it is hard to even comprehend how influential it is in our society. However, this year the performance caused quite a controversy when director Thomas Jolly, theatre actor and artistic director decided to present an act of Mockery towards the well known painting of Da Vinci – The Last Supper.
Origins of the game
Summer Olympic games originally served the purpose of pleasing the God Zeus -amongst other reasons such as the celebration of brotherhood, competing and sacrifice-. The athletes (word for “ one who competes from price” originated from the Ancient Greek language ) would compete against each other to entertain the crowd and prove the work and effort of each nation and contestant. The winners to be rewarded while the aristocrats get to enjoy the performance . Evidence shows that first signs of the ancient Games dates back to 776BC and were staged in Olympia, Greece, when the games have come to a short end at 393 AD and it took over 1500 years for the return of the Olympics later in 1896.
Well recognised logo of the game, the five rings represent the five inhabited continent, -Africa, Europe, America, Asia , Oceania. Pierre de Coubertin founder of the modern Games intended to create a signature -which first appeared in 1913- to regard every possible contestant.
French Affair, Blasphemy, drag queens and transgender parody.
This year’s -2024- performance brought countless of negative feedback thanks to the sensitive topic it reaches to . Two scenes were shared in the opening ceremony that appears to look like Jesus Christ and his followers from Da Vinci’s painting. It is hard to tell whether it was in fact a mockery of Christ or just a misunderstood representation of the feast of Dionysus -as the producers claiming – , however it is very clear that NBC knew what they were doing when framing -Nothing happens by accident when it has been practiced dozens of times.
Watch the whole video , -if you are still able to find it as due to the backlash the full video and images were deleted and or censored from the internet, to be exact, it is hard to even find parts of the opening on videotape.-
On display, a steady shot to open the sequence, then after an unusually long hold the shot begins to slowly move to reveal the “fashion show runaway” .The 4 hour long ceremony exhibited Transgenders and Drag queens dressing up in various dreadful clothing, and even an almost completely naked man painted in blue. Mentioned “Blue God” enters the stage only to close the performance with their last statics set as he climbs on a table surrounded by food.
The performance sparks outrage in the Christian community. Reactions points the presence of drag queens and transgenders as actors and that a woman plays “jesus”. The shocking live blasphemy is now considered as “the worst opening ceremony in the history of the Olympic”
Vaticans Response
A delayed response was issued by the Pope Francis for the displayed scenes that seems to represent a parody of Da Vinci’s famous Biblical creation of Christ – The Last Supper .
The Holy See was saddened by certain scenes at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games and cannot but join the voices raised in recent days to deplore the offence done to many Christians and believers of other religions.”
He added,
“Freedom of expression, which is obviously not called into question, finds its limit in respect for others. In a prestigious event where the whole world gathers around common values, there should be no allusions that ridicule the religious convictions of many people“
Pope has since spoken on telephone with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Unfortunately we have no details about their conversation other than what Erdogan’s office said, – he told the pope that it was “immoral”
