What may come as a surprise to some might be a calculated and anticipated move for others. Google, the most widely used search engine globally, has announced its biggest overhaul in over 25 years. The announcement took place on May 19, 2026, setting the stage for a significant shift in the engine’s functionality.
Starting June 2026, Google will update its search engine to be primarily powered by the Gemini 3.5 Flash AI model. This transition will steer the engine toward an AI-first, conversational search model more effectively tailored to the needs of individual users.
Google is planning to recreate the search engine it was originally meant to be: a personalized assistant that isn’t limited by pre-trained data, but rather has live access to the World Wide Web. The broad core update began rolling out on the 26th of May and is expected to take up to two weaks. Depending on the region, users should experience the changes by June.
In the first stage of the transition, Google.com will offer an adjustable sort of beta version where the users can switch between the ordinary browser engine and the AI-driven one.

Once users switch to the AI version, they are met with a conversational interface, similar to that used in the Gemini’s independent model, only this time it primarily acts as an assistant rather than a separate agent. Executives like Liz Reid call this “a new era for AI search.”
So what is new is that the single-line search box finally became dynamic and intelligent, so to say, it expands for longer queries and accepts multimedia with AI-powered intent suggestions. The previous “overview” feature has now merged into the AI mode, which is powered by Gemini’s latest model, describing a faster and more capable model than its predecessors. However, this is all a basic interface update as the technology evolves over time, the real deal is yet to be mentioned. Currently, the engine is still in its open beta version, and additional functions are limited, however, Google has promoted its most promising feature yet. By summer of 2026 -which technically starts in June- new AI agents will be available for users who can delegate tasks to them, such as running background processes in the browser, monitoring websites and products, or even the job market, potentially auto-applying with upcoming updates.

While for some these may not seem like particularly exciting updates, what this really means is that we finally have the first search engine fully optimized to function as an assistant, tailoring your requests, suggesting results, and even providing options to maximize your search experience. But this move isn’t just about satisfying users, the company is being outpaced by its AI competitors. As today’s strongest technology firm, it is difficult to dislodge from the market. However, with emerging rivals like ChatGPT, competition is intensifying, and the number of users relying on traditional search engines is rapidly declining. To prevent being overtaken, the tech giant launched the “Overview” AI mode back in 2025, which garnered 1 billion monthly active users within just one year. By introducing additional services like AI agents, it is re-monetizing its platform not only through ads but also via direct subscriptions and limited services, enabling further expansion of revenue streams. After investing approximately $200 billion in AI research, the company is now poised to capitalize on that investment.
Although the agents are expected to be placed behind a paywall, requiring a membership from users, if we consider the economic impact of this new update, Google might have just hit the jackpot. Think of all the businesses facilitated in digital retail, media, or various other online platform-based industries that now employ, in some cases, even thousands of employees to do this very same job, which can now be accomplished with a £100 subscription and five AI agents. Not only that, it runs constantly at no extra cost. Furthermore, this will become another add-on for Google Workspace; for Google Ads account holders and Google Workspace users, the AI mode includes a dedicated “Pro” setting that enables users to upscale the language model. With additional AI agents ready to handle autonomous tasks, Google might just regain its pride and steps forward as the leading force in artificial intelligence.
