Elon Musk, the successful yet, controversial genius, has just announced their next invention, one he believes will explode the internet. The billionaire has repeatedly hinted at developing some sort of flying car that would exist outside conventional aircraft or the eVTOLs being introduced today. Musk first mentioned the Roadster’s SpaceX package back in 2018 on X , adding that “nothing ,it would include 10 rocket thrusters for dramatic performance improvements.” But his comments on the subject have mostly seemed like teasers. Following this, on an interview with Don Lemon in March 2024, he said that he is fully commited to this project and elaborated that the Roadster will be a Tesla-SpaceX collaboration, describing it as “Jetsons vibes” and that it could be the most exciting and revolutionary project yet to exists “way cooler than cyber truck” he added.

The first official confirmation was during Tesla’s Q3 earnings when Elon referenced investor Peter Thiel’s lament about lacking flying cars replying “well, there is more to come” directly tying it to the Roadster. However, the billionaires recent appearance on the popular podcast The Joe Rogan Experience certainly cleared anyone of doubts.Musk explained to the host that the Roadster will feature “crazy technology” and that he is planning to make an official unveil by the end of the year, implying that the prototype is already in the test phase, and he also confirmed that a flying demo is coming describing it as crazier than all James Bond cars combined. After this interview, at the end of October 2025 he reiterated on X and multiple platforms that the design is complete, and that they are actively developing the prototype with an aim to bring it to production in early 2026.

The concept stems from Musks’s vision of combining an electric supercar with SpaceX’s cold gas thrusters allowing the car for a brief hovering or flight like maneuvers. While he reitareted that an official announcement with detailed product specifications alongside the prototype is yet to come, placing it somewhere around the end of 2025, Elon also disclosed some very intriguing details during his interview with Don Lemon. The billionaire elaborated that the cold gas thrusters are crucial in order to achieve sub 1 second 0-60 mph acceleration. He also stated that, in addition to an approximate top speed of over 250 mph , the vehicle will include an extended range of up to 620 miles flying time with a single tank.

The “flying” aspect is where this invention truly stands out and diverges from the modern conventional flying vehicles, as it would involve ten small rocket thrusters seemlesly embedded within the vehicles structural frame to avoid disturbing aerodynamics. These would generate the trust required for hovering, after which the driver could safely land and operate the vehicle on the road just like a regular car. Furthermore, the billionaire also explained that the tires alone, would not be able to handle the torque without slipping, so the thrusters will also add down force, or direct propulsion to maintain traction and will also be able to fire in reverse or sideways for rapid deceleration and sharper turns, effectively creating “air breaks”.

While we are still waiting for a prototype, which was ambitiously promised by the end of 2025, and there is no disclosed information about the vehicles exact design elements, Musk explained that it will be driven by wire-controlled yokes similar to aircraft controls, and has added that “its not even really a car”. Current speculations estimates the vehicles price around $200.000-$250,000, with a SpaceX package adding even further costs. Despite sounding incredibly impressive on paper, the concept will still require real world testing to determine its feasibility. Given Tesla’s track record of ambitious timelines, the technology would undoubtedly mark a unique and innovative Tesla-SpaceX crossover
