In the past few months, several videos have gone viral featuring a British teen using her new prosthetic arm. While this might sound fairly routine, the twist came when viewers realized that the palm of the arm isn’t just detachable — it can actually move independently while detached – eerily reminiscent of a sleek, futuristic version of the crawling hand- Thing from The Addams Family.
The Hero PRO prosthetic arm, developed by Open Bionics, represents a groundbreaking advancement in assistive technology for below-elbow amputees. This lightweight, waterproof bionic arm builds on the legacy of the original Hero Arm, offering enhanced features like wireless control, advanced grip patterns, and a high degree of customization. According to posts on X, and an inclusive interview given by Tilly Lockey, a 19 year old patient of the organization, the Hero PRO introduced a futuristic capability where the hand can detach and operate independently, performing tasks with a level of autonomy that mimics science fiction.

Functionally, the Hero PRO operates as a myoelectric prosthesis, utilizing sensors to detect muscle contractions in the residual limb, which are then translated into precise, intuitive movements of the bionic hand.
It retains core features such as a 180-degree rotating wrist, the ability to lift up to 8 kg (17.64 lbs), and up to six selectable grips for tasks like pinching, grabbing, or high-fiving.

The arm’s design prioritizes user comfort with a breathable, adjustable socket made from 3D-printed materials like Nylon 12, ensuring a bespoke fit through 3D scanning technology. Open Bionics continues its mission of accessibility, offering over 50 swappable magnetic covers for personalization—ranging from sleek Vortex™ designs to themed options like Marvel’s Iron Man—allowing users to express their personality while benefiting from cutting-edge technology.
The Hero PRO’s development reflects serious commitment to empower users, particularly children and adults aged 8 and up, by turning limb differences into a source of pride rather than limitation.

Priced competitively—potentially around £10,000 based on historical data,it remains one of the more affordable advanced bionic arms on the market, though exact pricing for the PRO model isn’t fixed, as each individual requires their own design and to undergo multiple surgeries .
While the idea of a detachable, autonomous hand sparks intrigue, official Open Bionics documentation available online, suggesting it may be an experimental or conceptual addition rather than a fully realized function in the current model. Nevertheless, the Hero PRO solidifies Open Bionics’ reputation for innovation, blending functionality, aesthetics, and affordability to redefine what a prosthetic arm can be.
