Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Meta, has now announced a significant change in the platforms content moderation policies. The organisation decided to move forward from relying on third party fact checkers, and instead the a more nuanced approach will be introduced on Instagram and Facebook. This new regiment will prioritize community driven moderation and personalized restrictions. The decision has sparked incredible controversy, however Zuckerberg decision was driven by the recent shift of X, promoting free speech. Some believes this change could potentially result on the widespread of misinformation and harmful content.
In 2016 , in the wake of the US presidential election, Facebook faced intense scrutiny over the role of it’s platform playing in the spread of misinformation. CEO Mark’s response was to introduce the first trick third party-fact-checkers in the program to identify false , misleading or hateful content. This approach was aimed to combat harmful information spreading, and promote more informed public discourse, however this move backfired more than anticipated. The reliance on automated third party fact checkers created a huge black hole for those companies that used Meta as advertisement and so the misinformation, scams and harmful content reached it’s peak, and there was no way to report or censor these companies as the policies were automatically done, and users were granted with very little to no credibility.Additionally these biased organizations lacked transparency and lead to censoring and suppressing of dissenting viewpoints, beliefs or simple disagreements. The public was once again discredited and stripped from authority and the rights of free speech.
Metas unpredicted switch from third-party fact checkers Is a part of a broader phase towards a more community centric approach in content moderation. The organization is placing a greater emphasis on it’s community notes feature, which allows users to add context and information to posts, providing a more nuanced and participatory approach to address harmful content.
This current change could have not been accomplished without the current change of Government- said Zuckerberg. The CEO has also voiced his opinions in a podcast on the previous restrictions and regulatory requirements that the USA government has placed the platform under, acknowledging the degradation of free speech and public authority. This change in government allowed social media platforms, such as X and meta to finally get rid of the harmful automated fact checkers, and restore free speech on the web.
Hate speech, misinformation, child exploitation and terrorism will now be identified using Community Notes and a newfound AI model that Meta is currently developing. The company is also exploring ways to personalized user experience, allowing users to further control the type of content they see and interact with.
This decision has sparked a heated debate about the balance between free speech and safety on it’s platforms. Some of the opposers argue that this could lead to an increase in harmful misinformation and believe that the third-party fact checkers play crucial role in protecting the public from threats.
Despite the fair points critics expresses , allowing private companies and government agendas to policy the public voice and to discredit a wide range of perspectives, was never a supported ideology by the majority. Supporters argue that community driven moderation is a more democratic and transparent approach than relying on decision making made by the corporation or Government policies.
Dana White to join the Board of Directors
Meta has surprised the public with another surprising decision. The company has released a press on January 6th announcing that alongside John Elkann and Charlie Songhurst , President and CEO of UFC , Dana White will also join the board of Directors. White has been a highly valued entrepreneur known for his Skill and ability to build a global brand. Mark believes that White’s expertise will be highly useful within the company and a valuable part of the Directors as the company continues to explore new opportunities in AI, wearables, and the future of Human Connection
The organizations current shift in content moderation is part of a broader movement to promote free speech, highly influenced by Elon Musk, and Donald Trump on on social media platforms. Meta’s move away from third party fact checkers and bans signals a recognition of the limitations of these approaches and a desire to restore the authority of the public by introducing more community centric solutions. This new approach faces one major challenge; to balance the public’s rights of free speech and to protect the platform’s users from harmful content .The success of the decision is remain seen, and will require careful adjustments to protect the purpose of Medias
