Elon Musk’s venture in a multitude of fields, including Artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, renewable energy, robotics and neurotechnology has had significant impact in our day to day life and stretched the possibilities of future innovations in many ways. Continuing his mission, the entrepreneur has now released an AI modell, entrusted to be the first non bios Language modell, with significantly lower censorship that other models are restricted by.
xAI – Seeker of truth
xAI , established by Elon Musk started it’s journey within the field of AI research on March 09, 2023 in Nevada, with it’s headquarters somewhere in the San Francisco Bay ares. The organisations mission is to develop a language modell that is “maximally curious and truth-seeking”, and to “understand the true nature of the universe” reported on the official website.
To achieve this, xAI assembled a team of experts from leading tech organizations, including OpenAI, DeepMind, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and Twitter. Notable team members include Igor Babuschkin, Manuel Kroiss, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, Christian Szegedy, Jimmy Ba, Toby Pohlen, Ross Nordeen, Greg Yang, Guodong Zhang, and Zihang Dai. These individuals bring a wealth of experience and expertise to xAI’s ambitious projects.
The first stage of the development was to secure thousands of Nvidia graphics processors to support the large language models. The organisation was aiming to raise $1 Billion from investor funds for this purpose but initially secured only $135 million by December 2024. However by May 2024, xAI has managed to raise additional $6 billion from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital.
The rapidly accumulated funds resulted in the development “Colossus”, a super computer cluster, touted as the largest in the world, that took only a four months for xAI to construct. The supercomputer is approximately constituted of 200,000 GPU’s and consumes a total of 200 megawatts of power while operating on full capacity, however further plans to expand it’s computational power tenfold are underway.

CEO Musk, has stayed true to his old habits when it comes to naming new inventions. The term “Grok” originates from a science novel originally published in 1961 by Robert A Henlein the “Stranger in as Strange Land” meaning something similar to comprehend something profoundly and intuitively.
Grok is xAI’s chatbot, originally only integrated within the social media platform X back in 2023, and was designed to provide real time responses, leveraging the data from X to enhance the interactions.
Grok 1 &2
Grok 1, launched in November 2023, featured a large language model with 314 billion parameters. Despite it’s capabilities, it lacked fine-tuning for specific applications and reliability. In August 2024, xAI released Grok 2, which introduced enhanced performance, improved reasoning abilities, and image generation capabilities through the integration of FLUX.1 from Black Forest Labs. Grok 2 was made available to X Premium subscribers, expanding its user base and functionality.
xAI has made significant strides in the AI industry since it’s inception. The organisation has unveiled it’s most advanced AI Modell to date Grok 3, and set official launch to February 2025. The billionaire announced that the modell was trained using ten times the computational power of it’s predecessor, utilizing the full power of the Colossus Supercomputer. This excessive training reported to include legal filings and expanded datasets, enabling Grok 3 to outperform competitors like OpenAI’s CPT-4o and DeepSeek’s V3 in benchmarks such as AIME. The rapid evolution of xAI’s language modell only exemplifies the company’s potential and commitment to advancing AI technology. Grok 3 was officially released on 17 of February 2025 .
- Advanced Reasoning Capabilities: Grok 3 introduces “Think” and “Big Brain” modes, allowing users to engage the AI in complex problem-solving tasks. These modes enable the model to break down intricate questions into manageable components, enhancing accuracy and depth in responses.
- Deep Search Functionality: xAI launched “Deep Search” alongside Grok 3, an AI-powered search engine that provides detailed explanations and articulates its thought process when responding to user queries. This feature aims to reduce the time users spend searching for information online by offering comprehensive and reasoned answers.
- Accessibility: Initially, Grok 3 was available to X Premium+ subscribers at a monthly fee of $40. xAI also introduced a new subscription tier, SuperGrok, offering advanced features for $30 per month. These subscriptions provide users with access to Grok 3‘s enhanced capabilities through the Grok app and website.
Market Position and Future Plans
xAI’s rapid deployment of Grok 3 and i’s even quicker evolution positions the organisation a formidable competitor within the AI industry, challenging well established entities like Open AI and Google. The organisations strategic integration of Grok into the X platform leverages a vast user base, and with X’s personalised restrictions provides a unique advantage in data acquisition and real-time interaction. Looking ahead Musk plans to open source Grok 2, fostering transparency and further innovation and collaboration within the AI community.
Additionally, the company aims to introduce a multimodal voice feature to Grok, enhancing user engagement through voice interactions. As xAI continues to innovate and expand, it is poised to make substantial contributions to the field of AI and it’s applications across various industries.
